A physician, teacher, and writer who devoted his career at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School to improving access to medical care and teaching young physicians the art of plain doctoring—the value and skill of listening to patients. For more than fifty years, he championed shared decision-making between doctors and patients and was an early advocate for team-based medicine involving nurses and social workers.
